Angioplasty was first performed in 1977 in Switzerland, by Dr. Andreas Gruntzig and in the US in 1981. Dr. Zalman first performed angioplasty during his training at Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City with Dr. Jan Voda in 1986. Subsequently, Dr. Zalman participated in clinical trials of the rotoblator atherectomy catheter and intracoronary stenting at UCSD and Scripps Clinic beginning in 1988. Since that time, Dr. Zalman has performed over 1,000 intracoronary interventional procedures and has become Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology. Currently, Dr. Zalman's focus is on the treatment and prevention of acute myocardial infarction by the optimal combination of interventional cardiology techniques and medical treatment, combined with risk factor modification such as smoking cessation and lowering of cholesterol.

At this time, over 800,000 interventional cardiology procedures are performed in the United States every year in order to stop heart attacks, or treat symptoms due to severe coronary narrowings. Significant advancements in equipment and medications have allowed the safe performance of multi-vessel angioplasties as well as intracoronary stenting to stop acute heart attacks, even while they are progressing. Concurrently, the safety of the procedures has improved, and coronary bypass surgery has become significantly less frequent.

Some examples of intracoronary angioplasty, stenting and rotoblator procedures performed by Dr. Zalman can be viewed by opening our Atlas.
